2. Discussions

The following is the brainstorming we did to come up with the research topic.
Questions generated:
  1. How can we feed 10 billion people?
  2. How do we use space more efficiently?
  3. Do you think we need to control the population?
  4. Can we technologise our way out of the problem of sustaining 10 billion people and over?
  5. What will happen to us in the 22nd century?
  6. Will we be able to find resources by the 22nd century?
  7. Are we going to colonise other planets?
  8. Will we reach the 22nd Century?
Classification of questions (Close and Open Ended):
[Close-Ended
Do you think we need to control the population?
Can we technologise our way out of the problem of sustaining 10 billion people?
Will we be able to find resources by the 22nd century?
Will we be able to reach 22nd Century?
Are we going to colonise other planets?

[Open-Ended
How can we feed 10 billion people?
How do we use space more efficiently?
Will we be able to find resources by the 22nd century?
What will happen to us in the 22nd century?

Advantages of closed-ended questions
Easy to answer as it has only one word.
The answer is straight and direct.
Easier to categorise and compare.

Disadvantages of closed-ended questions
The answer might not be clear at times and may need more elaboration.
People might not have the option that they want to choose.
Too many choices will confuse the person.

Advantages of opened-ended questions
The answer is long and has many points.
It elaborates the solution well.
There are an unlimited amount of possible answers

Disadvantages of opened-ended questions
It takes time to come up with an answer and say it.
There might be more errors in the answer.
Very hard to compare and organise answers
People may not want to give long answers and give a short answer.

Closed-Question to Open-Ended:
Original Question: Can we technologise our way out of the problem of sustaining 10 billion people?
Open-Ended Question: How can we technologise our way out of the problem of sustaining 10 billion people?

Open-Question to Closed-Ended:
Original Question: How are we going to feed 10 billion people
Closed-Ended Question: Are we even able to feed 10 billion people?

Prioritising Top 3 Questions:
Can we technologise our way out of the problem of sustaining 10 billion people?
Will we be able to find resources by the 22nd century?
Are we going to colonise other planets?

After discussion with our IRS Teacher, we have changed our question of "Can we technologise our way out of the problem of sustaining 10 billion people?", we have changed our research topic to:

We decided to change our topic into an easier one. We decided to look at the future food.

What is the ideal food for humans?
The reason that we have chosen this is that our original question was too vague and did not have a focus. We decided focus on food as that is important part of our survival on Earth.

Final Research Topic : What is the ideal food for humans?
